How to Unlock a Domain Before Transfer

Before transferring a domain to NiceNIC, the domain usually needs to be unlocked at the current registrar.

Quick answer:
Log in to your current registrar account, find the domain, turn off Domain Lock / Transfer Lock, make sure the status no longer shows clientTransferProhibited, then get the AuthInfo / EPP code and submit the transfer at NiceNIC.

What Does Domain Lock Mean?
Domain lock is a security setting that helps stop unauthorized transfers.
When a domain is locked, the status may show: clientTransferProhibited
This means the domain cannot be transferred until the lock is removed.

How to Unlock Your Domain
Step 1: Log in to your current registrar account
Go to the registrar where your domain is currently managed.
NiceNIC cannot unlock a domain that is still held at another registrar.
Step 2: Open the domain management page
Find the domain you want to transfer.
Look for settings such as:
  • Domain Lock
  • Transfer Lock
  • Registrar Lock
  • Transfer Protection
Step 3: Turn off the transfer lock
Disable the lock and save the change.
After this, the domain status should no longer show: clientTransferProhibited
Sometimes the status may take a short time to update.
Step 4: Request the AuthInfo / EPP code
After the domain is unlocked, request the transfer code from your current registrar.
This code may also be called:
  • AuthInfo Code
  • EPP Code
  • Transfer Code
  • Authorization Code
Please use the latest code when submitting the transfer.
Step 5: Submit the transfer at NiceNIC
After the domain is unlocked and you have the correct code, submit the domain transfer at NiceNIC.
If the transfer still fails, please check whether the domain has another restriction.

Why Can't I Unlock My Domain?
Common reasons include:
  • The domain is in the wrong account.
  • The domain was registered or transferred recently.
  • The domain contact information was recently changed.
  • The domain is expired or on hold.
  • The domain has a registry-level restriction.
  • The current registrar does not allow unlocking from the control panel.
If you cannot unlock the domain, please contact your current registrar and ask for the exact reason.

Transfer Still Failed After Unlocking?
Please check these items:
  • The EPP code is correct and up to date.
  • The domain is not within a 60-day transfer restriction period.
  • The domain is not expired, suspended, or on hold.
  • The domain status no longer shows clientTransferProhibited.
  • The transfer approval email has been confirmed if required.
If everything looks correct but the transfer still fails, please contact NiceNIC Support with your domain name and the error message.

Important Notes
NiceNIC can help you start and monitor the transfer, but the domain must be unlocked at the current registrar first.
If the status shows serverTransferProhibited, this may be a registry-level restriction and may require review by the current registrar or registry. After the domain transfer is completed, we recommend enabling domain lock again at NiceNIC to protect your domain.
