What Is an IP Address?

An IP address identifies a network interface so devices can exchange traffic. IPv4 uses values such as 192.0.2.10; IPv6 uses a longer hexadecimal format such as 2001:db8::10.

How Domains Use IP Addresses

  • An A record points a hostname to IPv4.
  • An AAAA record points a hostname to IPv6.
  • A server can host several websites on one IP when the web server uses hostnames correctly.

Public and Private Addresses

  • Public addresses can be routed over the internet.
  • Private addresses are used inside networks and are not directly reachable from the public internet.

Troubleshooting

Confirm both DNS and the application. A correct IP address does not prove that the service is running or that a firewall allows the required port.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know the change worked?

Check the current status in your NiceNIC account, then test the service that depends on the IP address. Do not rely only on the absence of an error message.

When should I contact NiceNIC Support?

Submit a ticket when the required control is unavailable, the status remains pending after the checks in this guide, or the issue depends on an account-specific order or registry decision.
