What Is an IDN

An Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) contains characters outside the basic ASCII alphabet, allowing names in scripts such as Chinese, Arabic or Cyrillic. DNS stores an encoded ASCII form called Punycode.

How IDNs Work

  • Users see the Unicode form where software supports it.
  • DNS and some control panels use a form beginning with xn--.
  • Character availability and language rules depend on the registry.

Before Registering

  1. Confirm that the extension supports the required script.
  2. Check the exact Unicode spelling and Punycode form.
  3. Review variant-character and bundling rules.
  4. Test email and application compatibility.
  5. Consider look-alike and phishing risks.

How do I know the change worked?

Check the current status in your NiceNIC account, then test the service that depends on the IDN. Do not rely only on the absence of an error message.

When should I contact NiceNIC Support?
