Why Is My Domain Name Not Working?

A domain can stop working because it is expired, held, delegated to the wrong nameservers, missing DNS records or pointing to an unavailable service. Diagnose in that order so one symptom is not mistaken for the cause.

Diagnostic Order

  1. Check the domain expiry date and registry status.
  2. Confirm the authoritative nameservers.
  3. Query A, AAAA, CNAME and MX records at those nameservers.
  4. Check DNSSEC if it is enabled.
  5. Test the destination server and required ports.
  6. Review recent DNS, hosting, transfer and contact changes.

Interpret the Result

  • No DNS answer: inspect delegation, holds and zone records.
  • Correct DNS but no website: inspect server, application, TLS and firewall.
  • Website works but email fails: inspect MX and mail authentication separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know the change worked?

Check the current status in your NiceNIC account, then test the service that depends on the domain service. Do not rely only on the absence of an error message.

When should I contact NiceNIC Support?

Submit a ticket when the required control is unavailable, the status remains pending after the checks in this guide, or the issue depends on an account-specific order or registry decision.
