Why Companies Choose .cc Domains
The .cc domain is a country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) originally assigned to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, but it has become popular globally as an alternative to .com due to its short and catchy nature. Many companies, startups, and even established brands use .cc for various reasons, such as brandability or unavailability of their desired .com domain.
1. Global Appeal & Availability
Although it originated as a country code (for the Cocos (Keeling) Islands), .cc ccTLD is administered by VeriSign’s subsidiary eNIC and functions globally as a generic domain with open registration—no proximity required.
2. Branding Flexibility
The concise structure of .cc resonates as modern, catchy, and flexible:
For branding: e.g., Arduino leverages it for "Creative Commons" connotation.
Teams: becomes shorthand for Community Center, Cricket/ Cycling Club, Consulting Company, etc.
Particularly appealing to startups, creative agencies, and tech ventures looking for memorable URLs.

3. Distinct Identity When .com Is Taken
Short, descriptive .com domains are often unavailable or unaffordable. Businesses turn to .cc as a fresh, branded alternative.
