Do .uk and .co.uk Domains Need an Authorization Code for Transfer?

As of October 2026
, a standard .uk or .co.uk registrar transfer generally uses the Nominet IPS Tag process, not the generic EPP authorization-code workflow used by many gTLDs. Nominet has announced a registry modernization scheduled for 9 February 2027, so this guide must be reviewed before that transition.

Transfer a .UK domain to NiceNIC under the current process

  1. Check the domain's current registrar, registrant contact details, expiry date and nameservers.
  2. Contact NiceNIC Support before submitting the transfer and request the current NiceNIC IPS Tag instructions for your specific .uk domain.
  3. In your existing registrar's account, request the registrar/tag change according to that provider's process.
  4. Monitor the transfer. Confirm the registrar of record and domain status after the change.
  5. Test DNS, website and email. A change of registrar does not automatically mean that your website hosting or email must move.

Why does a form ask for an authorization code?

A generic transfer form may display an EPP-code field even for a TLD that follows a different process. Do not invent a random code or enter a number merely to bypass validation unless NiceNIC Support has explicitly confirmed that workflow for the current form. Ask Support to provide the correct submission path.

What changes in 2027?

Nominet has announced major changes to .uk inter-registrar transfers as part of its .UK Standardisation project, scheduled for 9 February 2027. A transfer authorization mechanism and the exact registrar instructions may therefore change. Follow updated registry and NiceNIC instructions after the transition, rather than reusing screenshots from this article.

Current .UK transfer example: the IPS-tag route

Assume you want to move example.co.uk from another registrar to NiceNIC in October 2026.

  1. Ask NiceNIC Support for the correct receiving registrar IPS tag and any account/order preparation requirements. Do not guess the tag.
  2. Confirm the domain is active and you control the current registrar account.
  3. In the losing registrar's .UK transfer function, request the IPS-tag change to the confirmed receiving tag.
  4. Track the change with the receiving registrar; verify the registrant details, assigned registrar and renewal date after completion.
  5. Preserve existing nameservers unless you deliberately plan a DNS migration. Registrar transfer and DNS hosting are separate.

Older forms sometimes have a generic EPP-code field. Do not invent a six-digit "authorization code" unless the receiving registrar explicitly instructs you how to use the legacy form. The current registry transfer method does not become an EPP-code transfer merely because an order page has a text box.

Prepare for the February 2027 transition

Nominet states that the .UK platform standardisation is scheduled for 9 February 2027 and will change the inter-registrar transfer process, including secure Transfer Authorisation Codes (TACs). Those are future requirements at the time of this October 2026 guide; don't present them as mandatory today. Review Nominet's transition announcement and NiceNIC's updated transfer instructions when the transition takes effect.
