.HK, .com.hk, and .org.hk: Which One Should I Choose?
,
.HK.COM.HK and .ORG.HK are three different choices in Hong Kong's domain namespace. The right extension is not just a branding preference: HKIRC applies different eligibility and document rules to the categories.
Eligibility: the most important difference
Important October 2026 change: HKIRC's updated .ORG.HK rules took effect on 5 October 2026. Merely having company documents that say no dividends are distributed does not, by itself, establish eligibility. Review the accepted nonprofit organization categories and evidence before paying.

Which name fits your situation?
-
A personal site, international team or flexible brand:
.HKis often the simplest category to evaluate because local and overseas applicants may qualify. -
A Hong Kong-registered commercial business:
.COM.HKmay signal business presence, but check your exact company documentation first. -
A qualifying nonprofit:
.ORG.HKmay match the organization's role, provided it meets the updated policy. -
A brand serving several countries: you may also compare
.HKwith.COMor another suitable extension; no suffix alone guarantees search rankings or legal protection.
For every option, check name availability, current registration and renewal prices, transfer rules, registry verification requirements and the correct name of the legal registrant.
Avoid a rejected application
- Choose the exact suffix before collecting documents.
- Match the registrant's legal name and category to the evidence required by HKIRC.

- Submit accurate information using NiceNIC's current registration flow.
- If documents are requested, use the authorized upload process and track the pending order.
- Do not pay for a second attempt until you understand why the first registration was rejected.
For how to register a .HK domain, see .HK Domain Registration Requirements Guide. For final eligibility and document requirements, the current HKIRC policy controls.

Branding and protection choices
A Hong Kong business might use brand.hk for its public website and register brand.com.hk defensively, redirecting the secondary domain to the primary. That is often preferable to maintaining two duplicate websites with competing content. But registering two domains is a risk-and-budget choice, not a requirement or search-ranking shortcut.
If brand.hk is unavailable, test a meaningful variant such as brandgroup.hk or getbrand.hk instead of appending arbitrary numbers. Verify trademarks and similar existing names first. If you serve English and Chinese audiences, consider whether you also need a Chinese-domain or language-specific branding strategy, rather than assuming an English .HK name covers every use case.
Document detail: A .COM.HK registrant should check that its applicant name matches its Hong Kong business/company document. For .ORG.HK, the post-5 October 2026 policy may require evidence such as an applicable IRD tax-exemption letter or other qualifying nonprofit documentation—not merely a constitutional non-dividend statement.
