Company files three applications for what will likely be popular new TLD choice in next round.
Here we go again.
A company has filed several trademark application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in an effort to trademark the term ".coin" as a top level domain name.
.coin TLD, led by Meir Bank, filed three applications on May 16. Two are for .coin and one is for .coin TLD. Two have descriptions of "Brand development and evaluation services in the field of domain names" and the other for "Domain registry operator services".
They also are filed as 1A applications, not intent-to-use. The applications attach this page as a specimen.
If ICANN were to hold a new top level domain name application round today, I have no doubt that .coin would attract many applicants.
But the USPTO does not issue trademarks for top level domains, and in the last round, ICANN dismissed these attempts at new TLD frontrunning.
