What Is a .IT? Everything You Need To Know About .IT Domains

A .it domain is Italy’s country-code top-level domain, or ccTLD. It is a natural choice for websites serving Italian customers, including businesses, online stores, tourism services, and personal projects.

You do not necessarily need to live in Italy to register one. However, .it has eligibility requirements covering the domain holder’s citizenship, residence, or business location. It is not an unrestricted extension available to every applicant worldwide.

You can check .IT domain availability and pricing at NiceNIC. Before placing an order, confirm that the intended holder qualifies and that the registration details match that person or organization.

What Does .IT Mean in a Website Address?

The official meaning of .it is Italy. The extension is managed by Registro .it at the Institute of Informatics and Telematics of Italy’s National Research Council, CNR.

Although “IT” also stands for information technology, that association does not change the extension’s country-code status or registration rules.

A software company might choose .it for its name or Italian market presence. The domain itself does not certify technical expertise, Italian manufacturing, or the trustworthiness of the business behind it.

Likewise, .it and .it.com are different namespaces. An address ending in .it.com sits under the .com domain it.com; it is not a registration directly under Italy’s .it extension.

Who Can Register a .IT Domain?

Registro .it permits registration by eligible adults and organizations with the required connection to:

  • The European Economic Area, including EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.
  • The United Kingdom.
  • Switzerland.
  • San Marino.
  • Vatican City.

For individuals, eligibility can come from qualifying citizenship or residence. For organizations, the relevant business location must meet the registry’s requirements.

This means a qualifying applicant outside Italy can register .it. Conversely, having customers in Italy does not, by itself, establish eligibility.

The current criteria are published in Registro .it's registration guide.

Is a European Administrative Contact Enough?

Eligibility concerns the registrant, meaning the person or organization holding the domain. An administrative contact’s address is not a substitute for the holder meeting the rules.

A registrar’s address or a rented mailbox should therefore not be treated as automatic qualification. If your circumstances are unclear, NiceNIC support can help review the intended holder’s details before registration.

What Information Is Needed to Register a .IT Domain?

Alongside ordinary contact information, .it registration distinguishes between types of holders and uses identifying information appropriate to the applicant.

For example, the registry’s guidance for Italian sole proprietors and freelancers specifies a VAT number or numerical tax code. Other applicants should confirm which identifier applies to their country and entity type rather than copying an Italian example.

Useful preparation includes:

  • The holder's full legal name or registered organization name.
  • The correct individual or organization classification.
  • Accurate country, citizenship where applicable, and address information.
  • The relevant identification, tax, or registration details requested for that applicant.

Supporting documents may be requested during data verification. These can include identity or business records, depending on what needs confirmation. Do not assume that every applicant must upload the same documents at checkout.

For business registrations, using consistent legal details makes later verification and account administration easier. A trading name alone may not identify the legal entity clearly enough.

What Names and Characters Are Allowed?

The registry’s general naming rules specify a length of 3 to 63 characters. Standard letters, digits, and hyphens are supported, with no hyphen at the beginning or end.

.IT also supports internationalized domain names using characters from its approved character set. This does not mean that every symbol or writing system is accepted.

For an accented brand name, check the exact spelling with the registrar. Consider whether customers can also type it easily in email addresses and forms.

Some names are reserved, including certain geographical names and names associated with network services. A name that is not visibly used by a website is not necessarily available for registration.

Is .IT Good for SEO in Italy?

A .it address gives search engines a geographic signal associated with Italy.

Google's guidance on international websites explains the country-targeting role of ccTLDs. Unlike some country-code extensions Google treats as generic, .it is not listed among those exceptions.

That makes .it a reasonable option for a website focused on Italy. It does not guarantee higher rankings or make an otherwise weak page competitive.

A useful Italian market website still needs relevant content, clear product information, and a good customer experience. For an online store, practical details such as delivery coverage, currency, returns, and customer support matter alongside the address.

If your business serves several countries equally, compare a dedicated .it site with an Italian section of an existing global website. A separate domain brings additional content and maintenance work, so it should support a real market plan.

Why Can a Registered .IT Domain Still Be Inactive?

.IT has a DNS configuration check that can affect activation.

The registry uses the status inactive/dnsHold for a registered domain awaiting successful DNS validation. Registration and working DNS are therefore separate milestones.

This distinction matters if you use an external DNS provider. As a practical setup sequence:

  1. Add the domain to the DNS provider.
  2. Prepare the required website and email records.
  3. Obtain the assigned authoritative nameservers.
  4. Submit those nameservers through the registrar.
  5. Check that validation succeeds and the domain resolves.

Registro .it provides an official DNS verification tool.

If validation fails, simply waiting for “propagation” may not solve the problem. The DNS configuration needs investigation. Nameserver changes can also remain pending while the registry checks the proposed setup.

Before moving DNS providers, preserve existing email records as well as website records. Otherwise, the website may work while incoming mail stops reaching the correct service.

How Do .IT Renewals and Transfers Work?

Registration follows an annual cycle

The registry describes .it domains as having a one-year duration, maintained through annual renewal.

Check the retail registration and renewal charges for your domain. Registry-level maintenance arrangements do not mean your customer account renews without payment or action.

NiceNIC does not enable auto-renewal by default. If you choose to use it, check the setting and payment requirements, and keep a separate renewal reminder.

A transfer can change the expiry date

A .it registrar transfer uses an Authinfo code, obtainable from the current registrar.

An important detail is that a transfer can reset the annual expiry date. The registry’s FAQ illustrates a domain transferred on February 1 expiring on February 1 the following year.

Do not assume that a .it transfer simply adds a year to the previous expiry date. Confirm the expected date and transfer charge before proceeding.

The Registro .it FAQ explains annual duration and Authinfo recovery.

A registrar transfer also does not move website files or mailboxes. If the existing registrar supplies DNS, hosting, or email, check how those services will continue.

Is a .IT Domain Right for Your Website?

.IT is particularly relevant when your intended holder qualifies and your website has a clear connection to Italian customers or an Italian-facing brand.

It can support a local business, a dedicated Italian storefront, a tourism project, or a personal website. For a technology brand, the “IT” word association can be useful, but eligibility and country targeting still deserve consideration.

Before choosing a name, evaluate its spelling, renewal cost, and potential confusion with existing businesses. Registration availability does not establish permission to use someone else’s brand.

When those checks fit your plans, explore available .IT domains at NiceNIC and confirm the applicant requirements for your registration.
