Australian registration requirements

Choose your eligibility basis before ordering

.NET.AU and .COM.AU share auDA's commercial-entity and Australian Presence requirements. Prepare the details for the eligibility basis you will use.

ABN · ACN · ARBN

Register using your business details

Select the business number that establishes your eligibility and use the matching registrant or business name.

ABN — Australian Business Number

Provide your Registrant / Business Name and ABN Number.

ACN — Australian Company Number

Provide your Registrant / Business Name and ACN Number.

ARBN — Australian Registered Body Number

Provide your Registrant / Business Name and ARBN Number. This can be an eligibility basis for a foreign company registered to trade in Australia.

Contact details: Use the licence holder's accurate address and phone number. Reuse existing registrant contact information in the order flow rather than entering it twice.

Australian Trade Mark

Register using your Australian trade mark

Prepare the Australian trade mark details that support your application.

  • Trade Mark StatusRegistered or Pending Application. A pending application must meet auDA's published or accepted status requirement.
  • Australian Trade Mark NumberUse the number for the application or registration in the IP Australia database.
  • Trade Mark Name / WordsProvide the actual words of the trade mark, in their original order.
Exact Match required
If the Australian trade mark establishes your Australian Presence, the domain must be an exact match of its words under auDA rules.
Australian Presence is an eligibility requirement, not simply an address. A physical Australian address alone does not qualify you. auDA does not universally require a physical Australian business address when you meet another valid eligibility basis.
Step 1

Search your domain name

Check availability and pricing, then confirm the name meets the allocation rules.

Step 2

Provide eligibility details

Select ABN, ACN, ARBN or Australian Trade Mark and provide the corresponding details.

Step 3

Complete your registration

Review the licence holder, contact information, registration term and final price before payment.

Domain name eligibility

Domain Name Eligibility and Allocation Rules

Availability alone does not establish your right to a .NET.AU licence.

Business-based name allocation

When using a qualifying business basis, the name must meet auDA's allocation rules. These can include your business or company name, an acronym, or a qualifying connection to your goods, services or activities.

Check the basis that applies to the name you intend to register. Do not assume an ABN permits any available domain name.

Trade mark exact matching

When a trade mark establishes Australian Presence, keep all its words in their original order. Only the exclusions permitted by auDA apply; adding unrelated words or changing their order does not meet this rule.

Example: trade mark words “Harbour Studio”

Matching name: harbourstudio.net.au

Does not match: harbourstudioonline.net.au

If your domain does not match, use a qualifying name or another valid eligibility basis.

Licence & domain management

Keep your registration eligible and up to date

Choose your registration term and plan for renewal, contact updates and any change of licence holder.

Registration and renewal

auDA permits licence terms of 1 to 5 years. Choose a term supported by the NiceNIC order form. First-year registration and renewal prices are displayed separately above.

Renew before expiry and keep your business number or trade mark eligibility valid throughout the licence term.

Registrar transfer or ownership change?

A registrar transfer moves domain management. Changing the licence holder is a separate process and requires the new registrant to qualify.

Contact support before a business sale or a change to the business or trade mark used for eligibility.

Domain transfer

Move .NET.AU domains to a registrar built for safe domain management.

If you already own .NET.AU domains elsewhere, transfer decisions should not be based only on one renewal invoice. Check transfer eligibility, ownership access, billing reliability, support response time, API needs, and long-term domain management.

1 Unlock the domainConfirm the domain is not transfer-locked at the current registrar.
2 Get the Auth Code / EPP codeRequest the authorization code from the current registrar before starting the transfer.
3 Submit the transfer through NiceNICStart the transfer, complete payment, and monitor transfer approval status.
Bulk domain registration

Search and register multiple .NET.AU domains.

Paste multiple .NET.AU names, remove duplicates, review the count, and continue to bulk registration. This is useful for domain investors, brand teams, agencies, hosting providers, and resellers.

Enter domains or brand keywords

Questions before registering .NET.AU?

Answers about Australian eligibility, business numbers, trade mark matching, licence terms and domain management.

Who can register a .NET.AU domain?

Eligible commercial entities with an Australian Presence can apply. NiceNIC offers ABN, ACN, ARBN and Australian Trade Mark as eligibility bases in its registration flow. The domain name must also meet auDA allocation rules.

Which details are needed for ABN, ACN or ARBN registration?

Provide the registrant or business name and the number for the eligibility basis you select. Use accurate registrant contact details, including address and telephone number. Existing contact information can be reused in the registration flow instead of entered again.

Can a foreign company register .NET.AU?

A foreign company can qualify if it meets the Australian Presence and commercial-entity requirements, for example through an ARBN or an eligible Australian trade mark. A foreign company registration alone is not sufficient. If the trade mark establishes Australian Presence, the domain must be an exact match of its words under auDA rules.

Which Australian trade mark details should I prepare?

Prepare the trade mark status, Australian Trade Mark Number and Trade Mark Name / Words. The registration flow distinguishes Registered and Pending Application. A pending mark must meet auDA eligibility rules; the rules define a pending trade mark as an application with published or accepted status in the IP Australia database.

When does the trade mark exact-match requirement apply?

When you rely on an Australian trade mark to establish Australian Presence, the domain must include all trade mark words in their original order, subject to the exclusions allowed by auDA. Extra words or a different order are not permitted under this exact-match rule. If the name does not qualify, choose a matching domain or another valid eligibility basis.

Do I need a physical address in Australia?

Not necessarily. auDA does not use a business physical address to determine eligibility for com.au or net.au. You must still meet Australian Presence and commercial-entity requirements and provide accurate registrant contact information. Ask NiceNIC support about any additional address requirements for your order.

How long can I register or renew .NET.AU?

auDA permits licence terms of 1 to 5 years. Select a term available in the NiceNIC order form and remain eligible throughout the licence term. Registration and renewal prices are shown separately; confirm your account-level price before payment.

Does transferring the domain change its registrant?

A registrar transfer moves management of a domain; it does not automatically change the licence holder. A change of registrant is a separate process, and the new licence holder must meet eligibility requirements. Contact support before transferring a domain as part of a business sale.

Can I register multiple names through bulk search or the API?

Yes. Check availability and prices using bulk search or NiceNIC reseller tools. Every domain must independently meet the applicable eligibility and name-allocation requirements, including exact matching when a trade mark establishes Australian Presence.

What happens if my business or trade mark eligibility changes?

You must continue to meet eligibility requirements while holding the domain. Keep your registrant and eligibility details up to date. Contact NiceNIC if a linked business number is cancelled, a trade mark changes status or the licence holder changes.
