For a business serving customers in the Netherlands, .nl can be a practical address for a local store, service website, or dedicated Dutch version of an international brand.
You can check .nl domain availability at NiceNIC and review the registration options for your chosen name.
Before registering, it helps to understand the contact requirements, naming rules, and responsibilities that come with keeping the domain active.
Who Can Register a .nl Domain?
SIDN’s terms allow people and organizations based anywhere in the world to apply for a .nl domain through a registrar.
You do not need Dutch citizenship or a Dutch company simply to apply. However, the registration must identify the actual person or legal entity controlling and using the domain.
For a company website, that generally means recording the company as the registrant. Registering it in an employee’s or agency’s name can create problems when responsibility for the website changes.
The registration remains subject to SIDN’s terms and applicable requirements. Global eligibility should not be interpreted as permission to submit inaccurate details or disregard verification requests.
Do Foreign Registrants Need a Dutch Address?
Foreign registrants can use their genuine address outside the Netherlands.
SIDN automatically provides a Dutch domicile address for registrants whose addresses are abroad. This arrangement allows a bailiff to formally deliver official documents relating to the registration. SIDN forwards those documents to the registrant.
It is not a general mail-forwarding service, and it does not give your business a Dutch office.
Your registration details should still contain your own correct address. SIDN’s registration guidance specifies a home or office address rather than a PO box.
The SIDN domicile address explanation describes how the arrangement works.
What Information Is Needed to Register .nl?
The key information includes:
- The correct name of the individual or organization holding the domain.
- A genuine home or office address.
- Accurate contact information.
- A working administrative contact email address.
The administrative email deserves particular attention because it is used for notices about changes affecting the domain.
For example, a business registration should identify the business correctly while using a contact mailbox that its responsible team can access. A former employee’s abandoned inbox is a poor place for important domain notices.
If a registrar or SIDN requests verification, the information supplied needs to match the registration. Open eligibility does not guarantee that supporting information will never be requested.
What Are the .nl Domain Naming Rules?
SIDN’s published technical requirements specify:
- A minimum of 2 characters and a maximum of 63 characters before .nl.
- Letters from a to z, digits from 0 to 9, and hyphens.
- A letter or digit immediately on each side of a hyphen.
Under these rules, accented letters, Chinese characters, spaces, and other special characters are not supported in the registered name.
A technically valid name must also be available. Availability does not establish that a name is free of trademark or other third-party rights.
For a customer-facing brand, clear spelling matters more than using every available character. A name that is easy to pronounce and type is usually easier to share in advertising, packaging, and everyday conversation.
Is a .nl Domain Good for SEO in the Netherlands?
A .nl domain provides a geographic signal associated with the Netherlands.
Google explains that country code domains help indicate a website’s intended country audience. That makes .nl relevant when Dutch customers are the main audience.
It does not guarantee higher rankings. A useful Dutch website still needs relevant content, accessible pages, and information that helps customers complete their task.
For a store, that might include clear delivery coverage, product information, prices, and return arrangements. For a service business, it might include the locations served, booking process, and contact details.
There is also a strategic trade-off: a country-specific domain emphasizes one market. If you intend to serve many countries from a single website, a generic domain with separate regional sections may be easier to manage.
Google's international website guidance explains these choices.
Should You Choose .nl or .com?
The decision depends on the role of the website.
.nl can suit a Dutch market presence. It is a clear choice for a local business, a Netherlands-focused store, or a dedicated Dutch website for an international organization.
.com can suit a broader international identity. It may be more convenient when one site serves several countries and no single market defines the brand.
Some businesses use both. A .com site can serve the international audience while .nl provides a localized experience. That approach works best when each site has a clear purpose and the business has the resources to maintain both.
If the second domain simply points to the same website, a redirect can provide an additional branded address. It does not create a separate search presence by itself.
How Much Does a .nl Domain Cost?
Registrars set their own retail prices, so the useful comparison is the total cost of keeping the domain.
That includes the initial registration price, renewal price, and any separately purchased services.
A domain is the address. Website hosting and an email service are separate components unless they are expressly included in the offer.
NiceNIC's .nl registration page provides the starting point for checking your chosen name. The applicable registration term and final price should be reviewed before payment.
For a domain intended to represent a business for years, the renewal price is an ongoing operating cost worth considering from the outset.
How Do You Register a .nl Domain?
The process begins with a name that fits your business or project.
- Search the name. Check whether the exact .nl address is available.
- Review the order. Confirm the spelling, registration term, and applicable price.
- Enter the registrant details. Identify the person or organization that will control the domain.
- Accept the relevant terms and complete payment.
- Wait for registration confirmation, then connect your services.
A completed registration does not automatically create a website. DNS must point the domain to the appropriate hosting or website platform.
SIDN requires a primary nameserver and at least one secondary nameserver, with redundancy across separate networks or subnetworks. A suitable DNS provider normally manages this infrastructure for you.
Can You Transfer a .nl Domain to Another Registrar?
Yes. A .nl transfer uses a transfer token obtained from the existing registrar.
The new registrar submits the transfer using that token. SIDN states that the existing registrar must provide it within five days of a request.
A registrar transfer and a website migration are different operations. Moving the registration does not automatically move website files, mailboxes, or hosting.
Before a transfer, it is useful to confirm whether existing DNS and email services will remain available. Where DNSSEC is enabled, its configuration also needs to remain consistent during any associated DNS changes.
SIDN's .nl transfer guide explains the registry process.
What Happens If a .nl Domain Is Cancelled?
SIDN places a cancelled .nl domain in quarantine for 40 days.
During this period, the previous registrant can arrange reinstatement through the former registrar or a new one. Other people cannot simply register the quarantined name.
Reinstatement involves a charge, with the customer price determined by the registrar.
This quarantine period begins after cancellation. It should not be treated as an additional period of normal website service or as permission to postpone renewal.
For an active business domain, the practical priority is to follow the renewal deadline shown by your provider and keep the account’s contact details current. If the domain has already entered quarantine, prompt contact with the registrar gives the best opportunity to resolve it within the available window.
Does .nl Registration Include WHOIS Privacy?
Personal-data handling and proxy registration are different things.
SIDN requires the actual controller and user to be recorded as the registrant. Its terms do not permit replacing that party with a privacy or proxy provider as the nominal registrant of an actively used domain.
That does not mean every piece of submitted personal information is automatically public. Public disclosure is governed by SIDN’s privacy and lookup policies.
For .nl, a generic promise of “anonymous ownership” or “proxy registration included” would therefore be misleading.
Is .nl Right for Your Website?
.nl is worth considering when a Dutch audience is central to your plans. Its main value is the clear connection with the Netherlands.
That connection works best alongside a website that serves the intended audience well: understandable content, accurate business information, and a straightforward way to buy, book, or make contact.
For businesses ready to establish that presence, explore available .nl domains at NiceNIC and compare the names that fit your brand.
